The five-day-long celebration of the festival of lights, Diwali, begins with Dhanteras or Dhanatrayodashi and Dhanvantari Trayodashi. Marking the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha, Dhanteras falls in Karthik month as per the Vikram Samvat Hindu calendar and is considered an auspicious day to buy gold jewellery items, coins, and steel utensils. The concept of buying jewellery on Dhanatrayodashi comes directly from its Sanskrit name where the word ‘Dhan’ means wealth, and ‘Teras’ means thirteen. On this day dedicated to wealth, people flock to markets and online stores to buy gold coins and jewellery items as well as new kitchen utensils. It is said that buying something new brings prosperity, making their home environment favourable to welcome the Goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. Dhanteras 2022 is celebrated on the 23rd of October,a Sunday.
The story behind the origin of Dhanteras celebrations goes back to the churning ocean event, or Samudra Manthan, which is one of the best-known stories in the Hindu Philosophy. While the entire arrangements to churn the ocean of milk was to obtain the elixir of immortality or Amrit, many other things came out of the ocean too, and one of them was Goddess Lakshmi. It is said that Dhanatrayodashi 2022 is celebrated to mark the day when the Goddess of wealth graced the universe with her presence.
On this day of Dhanteras 2022, people pray to Lakshmi and bring home wealth to invite Goddess into their home. The day usually begins with waking up early and getting ready to pray to Lakshmi for prosperity and well-being. By the end of the day, people get rid of all the waste and clean their home to light lamps (diyas) in the name of Lakshmi as well as Kuber, the treasurer of wealth. Furthermore, Dhanteras puja is performed in the evening.
This year, Dhanteras is falling on Sunday, 23rd October. The Dhanteras 2022 puja Muhurat is between 07:29 PM to 08:39 PM. Dhanteras 2022 also has below-mentioned timings for different muhurats:
